Adapted from Marjane Satrapi’s autobiographical novel, Persepolis is a moving tale about a young girl growing up during the political turmoil of Iran. We follow Marjane’s struggle against an increasingly repressive regime before escaping to Vienna only to find herself unsettled for different reasons as she grows into a young woman. The film manages to retain a childlike quality whilst dealing with some serious political issues and a difficult personal journey. It is beautifully stylised in black and white and well worth a watch for anybody in search of something a bit different.
